The Experimental Skirt

Please excuse the wrinkles, I should have taken the pictures at the beginning of the day...

I made an experimental skirt. I didn’t use a pattern. I didn’t really even have a plan. I just made it up as I went. There was a lot of trial and error – mostly error. Here’s what I started with:

I even used interfacing!

No pattern, but if you look very closely you might see my pen lines. I just used a regular pen, not very professional.

I used a skirt that was slightly too big to make my own pattern, and when I seemed up my skirt it was also slightly too big, weird how that happens…  Then I just estimated and sewed a new seem – too small. Apparently all that pinning and measuring is not just a fun exercise for seamstresses. But eventually I got it right and now it fits well. I also mistakenly made the waist band a straight line of fabric. My waist is not straight line like a pencil, so why I thought this would work out is beyond me. Rather than take the entire thing apart I decided to just sew a random dart in the side. It’s not that noticeable, but I’ll probably wear a belt with this anyway, so no one will see it. I also had to sew and re-sew the 7 (7!!?!?!?!) buttons. Have I mentioned before that I hate sewing buttons? I do, with a growing passion. My next project will definitely not have buttons.

Overall, I learned a few things and I ended up with a moderately cute skirt. I’m not a huge fan of the print, but it’s linen, and at $3/yard it was hard to pass up. I’m sure I’ll wear it at least a few times.
