The Experimental Skirt

July 21, 2011

Please excuse the wrinkles, I should have taken the pictures at the beginning of the day...

I made an experimental skirt. I didn’t use a pattern. I didn’t really even have a plan. I just made it up as I went. There was a lot of trial and error – mostly error. Here’s what I started with:

I even used interfacing!

No pattern, but if you look very closely you might see my pen lines. I just used a regular pen, not very professional.

I used a skirt that was slightly too big to make my own pattern, and when I seemed up my skirt it was also slightly too big, weird how that happens…  Then I just estimated and sewed a new seem – too small. Apparently all that pinning and measuring is not just a fun exercise for seamstresses. But eventually I got it right and now it fits well. I also mistakenly made the waist band a straight line of fabric. My waist is not straight line like a pencil, so why I thought this would work out is beyond me. Rather than take the entire thing apart I decided to just sew a random dart in the side. It’s not that noticeable, but I’ll probably wear a belt with this anyway, so no one will see it. I also had to sew and re-sew the 7 (7!!?!?!?!) buttons. Have I mentioned before that I hate sewing buttons? I do, with a growing passion. My next project will definitely not have buttons.

Look at those buttons!

Ta-dah!

Overall, I learned a few things and I ended up with a moderately cute skirt. I’m not a huge fan of the print, but it’s linen, and at $3/yard it was hard to pass up. I’m sure I’ll wear it at least a few times.

I’m enjoying your posts. You are doing a great job, very creative! Do I see weeds in your garden?

Thank you! And yes, those are weeds… I might just start to embrace the wild, rustic look. If we could break out of this crazy heat wave long enough to be able to go outside for more than a couple minutes I might get to weeding.

Send me your measurements! Also, you could go on fabric.com and pick some fabric out, since we should probably not have matching haha… OR we could plan a visit to the fabric district in Philly!!! I have wanted to go their for a while!

I’m always up for a trip to the fabric district, and our favorite French restaurant Beau Monde – it’s a creperie and it’s right by the fabric stores. Let me know!

Thank you! I was planning to wear it to the big Crab Fest, but I thought it might be safer to try it out on people who’s vision would be lightly clouded by the fact that they like me already haha…

Somehow I missed this post earlier. I cannot believe you made that skirt without a pattern! I didn’t realize that. I saw it in person and it is adorable, just like you.
