First Annual Family 5K

August 22, 2012

Tim, my father-in-law, had a great idea a few months ago: let’s have a family 5K. Everyone in the family can come and take part in a little familial competition. What’s more fun than that? I loved the idea, so I tried to help make it happen. Last Saturday, August 18th, at 9:00am the first annual Family 5K took place at the Duckworth house (in-laws, not mine).

The competition was fierce. Some people managed to get their personal best times, or very close – including me! I don’t know how your family competitions go, but in my husband’s family, there’s no such thing as friendly competition. They laugh and have fun, but they will kill themselves trying to beat you at the same time. I love it!

Our winners were: 1st place – Uncle Mike, 2nd place – Tom (his son), and 3rd place – Timmy (whoo!). I told Timmy that he was not allowed to let Uncle Mike and his family take home all the medals, so he ran his second best time ever and managed to get on the podium. Great job everyone! Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I was the first girl in!

In order to include some of the non-running family in the competition we also held a team t-shirt contest. Everyone did an excellent job coming up with their t-shirt designs! The Hawaiian honeymooners had bright neon shirts that read: “We’re still running on island time”. The Trouts had shirts with a picture of a trout, which read, “You can probably catch us”. They also printed on the sleeve a classic Aunt Rose quote, “Why doesn’t everyone just slow down?”. The Koons family represented in tie-dye, the Duckworths came with their own team logo. Timmy and I have been watching Game of Thrones, so we made a family crest to represent House Duckworth. In the end, we couldn’t pick a winner, everyone’s shirt was so perfect for their team personality.

I can’t wait for next year’s competition!

Wish I could have been there! Next year can you hold it earlier in the summer?
It looks like it was well organized and I know it was fun.

    Love,
    Aunt Betsy

Thanks to all of the Duckworths for organizing the fun day! Melissa also made delicious granola bars in cute bags, listed running quotes on the water bottles, got the medals, MK made lots of food for all of us and Tim went out early and marked the course – and gave us excellent pre-race instructions! It was so much fun.
    We had a great time!
    Love,
    Aunt Rose
