Steelman Triathlon – Round 2

August 15, 2012

Last weekend Timmy competed with 2 of his cousins in the Steelman Triathlon Relay at Lake Nockamixon. Their team, Team PDK, took 1st place last year, so this year the pressure was on. Timmy does the cycling leg, his cousin Philip does the swimming and his other cousin, Mikey, does the running. That last sentence reminded me of The Newheart Show (I think?): “This is my brother Darrel, this is my other brother Darrel…” Haha, Anyway…

Mikey’s dad, Mike also competes on a seperate team, and they are our primary competition. Last year the cyclist on their team did a fair amount of trash talking, so Timmy trained hard and had a great race. This year their cyclist was ill, so to make up for his potentially less impressive performance he found a ringer to do their swim; one of the top high school swimmers in the area. While this isn’t technically cheating, it is a pretty questionable tactic. And perhaps a bit desperate. So, not only did Team PDK have their past record to keep up with, they now have a ringer on their primary competition’s team.

Despite an excellent performance by Philip, who took a minute and a half off of his previous time, he was still nine minutes behind their star swimmer. Timmy went out hard to make up as much of the difference as he could, maybe a little too hard at first. He did manage to make up about four and a half minutes on their cyclist, though he admittedly had a mechanical issue. It all came down to the run – father pitted against son in an epic duel for dominance.

We waited and watched to see which one would come around the corner first, Mike or Mikey. Finally, Mikey emerged from the woods looking strong, he managed to make up enough time to beat Uncle Mike!! Whoo Team PDK!!!  Uncle Mike followed a little too closely, only 20 seconds behind, and took 2 minutes off of his personal best. In the end Team PDK managed to hold on to their 1st Place title in the Men’s Relay division, but slipped to 3rd in the Overall rankings. Great job everyone!!

I’m taking bike and swim applications from anyone wishing to join my team for next year! I’m willing to do the Olympic length or the shorter Sprint.
