Friendship Beads

February 2, 2012

I used to love making friendship bracelets. When I was younger I made all kinds of cool macrame and knotted bracelets with lots of colors and designs and beads. Unfortunately, I lost them all along the way, and stopped making them by the time I was in high school. But when I saw this tutorial on one of the fashion blogs I read (Honestly…WTF), I had to give it a shot. Apparently, friendship bracelets aren’t just for young girls and hipsters anymore…

The first one was a pain to make, even though it’s just braiding. The beads weren’t working with the thread. But once I got the hang of stringing them on (and got some better beads) I was able to make all of these in an hour or two. They’re cute, and if I layer them on my wrist, quite trendy. I think I would have loved making these as a kid too, so share this idea with the young girls in your life.

I love fun crafty things that you can do with kids who are in the in between ages. There are surprisingly few ideas out there for girls between 10 and 13. They can’t quite handle the tough and tedious tasks but they’re well beyond basic cutting and gluing. I happen to know a really cute girl right in that range who loves creating things, so I’m always on the lookout for crafts she can make and be proud of. See anything neat? Pass it along, I’d love to share it with her! (And Gabby, I’m sending a kit along with your birthday present so you can make these for yourself and your friends!)
